The 2014 MTV VMA's Red Carpet

So the MTV VMA's were last night. Nothing happened that got even close to the Miley/Robin Thicke stuff of last year. There were a couple of minor wardrobe malfunctions and Beyonce really tried to make the world believe that she and JayZ are not getting divorced.

Shall we review the red carpet?

Ariana Grande:
This girl gives me a firm case of the 'ughs'. I don't know if it's her twee 'ness or just her super annoying songs that have potential but never go anywhere. Or this outfit. Ugh. At the very least, match your leathers.

Also - how hot was she? It was 90 degrees here in Montreal yesterday, it must have been sweltering there.

Beyonce:
Didn't walk the red carpet, looks like. Or my picture sucks. Either way. This dress is really epic in a 'shut up about my marriage falling apart' kind of way. I like the new darker hair on her.

Here's the video of her Video Vanguard performance. She's really trying to make this thing work and that crowd was kind of dead, no?

Chloe Grace Moretz:
I read 'If I Stay' this weekend. It's REALLY short. Like, to the point that I don't understand how they made a movie about it.

I like this outfit, but not for her. Like, I feel like someone like Kelly Ripa should be wearing this. Or Mrs Brady.

Demi Lovato:
I am forever feeling bad for this girl. She tries SO hard. She's really cute when you see her on Jimmy Fallon, etc, but she seems like she's always on and not happy with herself. And I'm sure that's reading into the fact that you know she's had coke problems and cutting issues...but still. This dress is trying really hard.

Gwen Stefani:
Come on! This is so cute. She's 45 this fall and there was a lot of talk about her face looking a bit frozen...like she's gone the Botox route. I really hope she hasn't, but it would explain how she hasn't aged in 15 years.

This is Judy Jetson and I love it anyway.

Iggy Azalea:
Well, this is kind of epic and amazing. It's really fun and it fits like a glove. I love it.

Jennifer Lopez:
Thank god she came alone, not with Casper, who she was seen with last week. And she looks AMAZING. Like, she's basically schooling the kids on how to look amazing. I mean, the outfit is a bit much...I'd have love to seen something more playful, but it's still great because it's her.

Her hair kills me. Can I have that?

Julianne Hough:
I have a major soft spot for this one. I feel like she really got the raw end of the deal when she was bearding for Ryan Seacrest and then they broke up. But I did see 'Rock of Ages' and that was horrific. But I still like her.

I also like this dress. Even though it looks a little too long and balloon-y on her. I like the rich color, I like the cut outs. They're subtle and pretty. I'm not in love with the hair, I feel like she could have done more with it, but she looks cute either way.

Katy Perry and some guy I don't care about:
I don't care about him because he's not Justin Timberlake. But this is AMAZING. I'm so in love with Katy Perry for paying tribute to this amazing Justin & Britney look from years ago. And whoever this doof is, I love him for doing it.

Kesha:
She looks so pretty and good. Since she came out of rehab, she really seems a lot more feminine and less disgusting.

Kim Kardashian:
What a fashion victim. No one cares that you're wearing Balmain resort when you look so epic-ly uncomfortable. Like, she basically looks like Kanye made her wear this. She looks like she doesn't know what to do with her arms, like she's scared to move for fear of exposing a breast.

I'm no fan of the nude bodysuits she's been wearing lately, but it would be better than this. At least those show off her famously curvy bod.

Kendall & Kylie Jenner:
Ok. So yah.
But boring. The Kardashians kind of failed tonight in terms of excitement.

Laverne Cox:
Ha! Amazing and super hot. I wish I had her body. And that hair. Yes, we all know it's a weave, but it's a great looking weave.

Lucy Hale:
She was one of the first to arrive, because I was watching the MTV streaming and hers was the 2nd picture up when the red carpet was still empty.

Isn't she popular? Why did she have to do that?

This is cute. It's a little too cute, kind of like her. But whatevs, at least it has some edge with the leather and the black. Not sure what is happening on her feet though.

Miley Cyrus:
One year after the famous nude bikini, chicken breast butt cheek incident, Miley arrived looking AMAZING and keeping it pretty quiet. A year makes a big difference in someone's 'ness'. I like this Miley. Hopefully she sticks around.

Nicki Minaj:
This one. I like the dress and the lob (long bob) here. It seems like after this the production went to hell. Below is a gif of her walking on stage with Jessie J and Ariana Grande holding her dress together because they couldn't get the zipper done up in time for her to hit stage.

Just don't. K?

Nina Dobrev:
This is actually the first time I've ever seen Nina Dobrev not look totally amazing. I didn't even know it was her when I first saw the picture. Now, granted, this is a terrible picture, but it doesn't change things. She doesn't take horrible pictures.

A lot of it is the hair. But that dress is really kind of a mess too. It looks too big (like former BFF Julianne Hough's) but it's also weird around her torso, making her look thick where she certainly isn't. Not flattering.

Rita Ora:
Was dressing for a vampire ball or something. I don't know what is up here. I am not in love with this look. It's a lot of dress for an event that's supposed to be more sexy/fun than serious/glam.

Sarah Hyland:
Another vampire ball-er. No, not really. I like this. I like the separates. I like the Grecian look too. I dig the dark lipstick on her, it's really pretty. I like this.

Solange:
I die for this. Not because it's totally flattering or great, but because of how amazing she looks and how well she is pulling it off. Her hair looks AMAZING like that.

Taylor Swift:
You know, I've used the term 'ness' today a lot, but here's another case of someone not really having the 'ness' to pull off what they're wearing. Taylor is cute. She's adorable. She's launching a pop career and I am certain that we will have to listen to shake it off for 6 months until our ears bleed.

But this romper is not her. And she doesn't have what it needs to pull it off. This is, like, Beyoncé-level -attitude-required stuff. She just looks like she's wearing an ill-tailored Charlotte Russe version of a romper.

It's not good.
