The 2010 Independent Spirit Awards

As you know, the Oscars are tonight...I'm very excited and looking forward to attempting to be a little more live than the past. I attempted to warn my husband and he looked very unimpressed with my intentions. In attempting to be more live, I will be preventing him from watching any more episodes of 'Chuck' season 2, because I will be otherwise occupied.

Too bad!

The other night it was the Independent Spirit Awards and it brought out some people...I would say majoritarily B list.

Allan Cumming:
Can we say forehead? Yikes. I like this guy, he's the good kind of weird, but still. His forehead is making me nervous.

Carey Mulligan:
She's nominated for an Oscar, but she's been beat out at every awards show by the sweetheart Sandra Bullock...she's a long shot to win tonight, but she was apparently very good. God, just realized I haven't seen any of the movies nominated tonight...ok, not true, but none of the serious ones.

I'm not crazy about how she dresses, she dresses matronly and she's young...no need for that. And the hair is special. I don't know. I think I've decided I don't like her. I don't like this new breed of young actresses who are sullen (ahem Kristen Stewart) and being coy about being happy with their career. Come on. You are either happy to be in it, or not. Let's not play games.

Emmy Rossum:
Of course this dolt would wear bubblegum pink. Ew. And her hair. Like, who goes to an awards show with hair like that? I would have that hair after waking up and then would do something about it before even letting my husband see me. Ugh. She sucks.

Helen Mirren:
She's hot. Seriously. She has cankles, but she's super hot. And I don't know if that printed fabric is part of the dress or a tiny train on her purse, but I like it. It takes a basic silver outfit (love it. Classy) and makes it a little bit fun.

And seriously? Her hair? Hot.

Ileana Douglas:
She is the type of actress who should be at these awards. Everything she does is different. And I must say, I love her outfit. Love the dress, love the khaki metallic leather shoes. Love, love, love. For going out with girlfriends though...not so much for an awards show. Either way. Fab.

Johnny Weir:
I love this kid. He is 100% fabulous. Some ignorant reporters from my home province said some really stupid shit about him during the Olympics and Johnny handled it with class, dignity and intelligence. I am super respectful of everything he said in his statements about it because it encouraged people to have an open mind and didn't make any outright judgment calls about sexuality. He basically said he is what he is and if people don't like it, they can kiss his ass, and that's exactly how it should be.

And kids should understand that you can be whomever, however you want and you shouldn't be judged for it. You should be able to dress in sequins and be a figure skater without judgment. You could dress up as a tree and hang out in a mall for all people should care. People should concentrate a lot more on their own problems then projecting onto others.

Ok, off soapbox. Love his outfit, not super in love with the shoes, because they look a little clown-like with the slim pants...still. Love him.

Maggie Gyllenhall:
I would have that flustered look too if I had unnecessarily worn black tights with an outfit that didn't need them. I get it, she's quirky, but they're just so unneeded. The dress is kind of fabulous, but it needs to not be so bedroom-y...

In other news there are rampant rumous about that she has gotten a lot of plastic surgery over the past few months. I can't say I see a huge difference, so if she did get some, it's subtle, but I do agree with people that she looks better than before. I can't pinpoint why, but her face is less gross. You be the judge...check out these 2 articles: 1 and 2

Maria Bello:
Seriously, I had to relook at this picture many times to make sure it wasn't Rachel Zoe. At first I was thinking there is no way, then I questioned myself (just because of the hair) and then I noticed that she is actually gorgeous and in great shape, so I realized it couldn't be.

I love that dress. That is a very lovely way to wear a one-shoulder dress and not look too 80's. Great legs, great shoes. She could fix the hair though...that would take away the Rachel Zoe factor.

Mariah Carey:
She really jammed herself into that dress, didn't she? And she looks like she's about to topple over from the effort of standing there. Fantastic, gorgeous cut in her leg though, good for her. But the dress is so tight and she looks like a chicken...all round on the top and skinny legs on the bottom...she looks SO uncomfortable. If only she would wear something that fit...

Matt Dillon:
This guy does not age. Nor does he change his clothes. Seriously, I think I've seen him in this outfit a million times. And why? Who wears a knit polo buttoned up under a shiny suit? Ray Liotta in any gangster movie ever made? Check.

Matt Dillon in public? Check. Seriously - there wasn't a better picture of him. Sorry!

Olivia Wilde:
This girl is beautiful. Very, very pretty. And this is one of the best things I've ever seen her in. So much better than that garish purple thing she wore and much better than the Marchesa she wore with the mesh back...and I liked that.

This is GREAT. I love that she rocked neutrals, I love that her hair is soft, I love the casual jewelry. Very. Well. Done.

Rosario Dawson:
I must have told you a million times that I love this girl. She reminds of my best friend and she seems really cool so I immediately love her. I do not, however, love this dress. I don't think it's flattering.

For such a hot pieces of ass, she's wearing something so demure and boxy. Also, the flash of the matronly white bra through the top is really not doing it for me. She needs to wear something with more waist definition and a tonal darker taupe bra would have been much better. Imagine this dress with a black belt...gorge. Call me if you want to hook it up, R.

Vera Farmiga:
Have I mentioned that I did not love' Up in the Air'? I think Jason Reitman did a great job with the screenplay and I thought the movie was good, but Oscar worthy? No. Sorry. Not to be an ass, but really no. feel like Clooney was rarely in it and the rest of it kind of just buzzed through my brain like an announcement at an airport. Low impact, you know?

Vera was good, for what it was, but there is something about her eyes that really weirds me out. They're so light and she ends up looking like a jungle creature wearing couture in most photo ops. I'm glad she's wearing color though...and hope she does it tonight too, because she's been all about the beiges/blacks/greys lately and it's tiresome.

Ok kids, that's it. Are we excited for tonight/tomorrow?

I am starting a new job Wednesday so the next 2 days will either be insane enough that I won't be able to get anything out, or so boring that I'll be able to do it from work and won't care because I'm leaving...either way...OSCARS!!!! It's the climax of the awards season!
